I. Czym są czasowniki modalne?
Czasowniki modalne to specyficzny rodzaj czasowników.
- Nie odmieniają się przez osoby. (Zawsze mają taką samą formę).
- Nie przyjmują formy ciągłej (-ing)
- Większość nie występuje w czasie przeszłym.
- Łączą się z innymi czasownikami.
- Odmieniają się przez inwersję.
II. Po co używamy czasowników modalnych.
Używamy ich najczęściej, gdy mówimy o obowiązku, powinności, przymusie, zakazie, nakazie, o tym co można robić i co umiemy bądź potrafimy zrobić.
III. Co oznacza „can”?
Czasownika can używamy, gdy mówimy:
I can swim.
My mother can speak English.
I can meet you tomorrow.
I can use father’s laptop.
IV. Co oznacza „should”?
Should używamy, gdy chcemy komuś doradzić, mówiąc, co powinien, bądź nie powinien zrobić.
You should go to see the doctor.
You shouldn’t spend so much time in front of your TV.

VI. Jak odpowiedzieć na pytania na „czy”?
Na tak zwane „yes/no questions” odpowiadamy pełnym zdaniem. Samo „yes” lub „no” nie wystarczy. Należy jednak pamiętać, że udzielając odpowiedzi zawsze używamy zaimków osobowych „I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they”.
Can I go? | Yes, you can. | No, you can’t. |
Can you swim? | Yes, I can. | No, I can’t. |
Can your father sing? | Yes, he can. | No, he can’t. |
Can your mother speak English? | Yes, she can. | No, she can’t. |
|
|
|
Can we go? | Yes, you can. | No, you can’t. |
Can Peter and Daria stay with us? | Yes, they can. | No, they can’t. |
Czasami musisz umieć rozpoznać w zdaniu podmiot i szybko zamienić go na zaimek osobowy, tak jak w przykładach powyżej.
VII. O czym muszę pamiętać układając pytania o coś konkretnego?
Jeżeli zadajemy pytanie z użyciem zaimka pytającego „what”, „where”, „when”, „why” to wtedy musimy pamiętać, że zasada inwersji nadal obowiązuje.
